SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The streets of Somerville were packed with people listening to the sounds of Porchfest even while Mother Nature had other plans.

When the Somerville Arts Council said Porchfest was happening rain or shine, they meant it. Attendees gathered at the community-driven music festival, where residents hosted artists and their bands on porches across the city as the rain poured. But even gray skies can't kill the vibes for Jillian as she strolls out for Somerville Porch Fest.

"I think the spirits are high and you get to hang out with your friends, rain or shine."

What started with just 60 bands in 2011, has evolved into an extravaganza featuring nearly 500 performers on 443 porches. Hundreds of shows take place throughout the city on porches, in driveways, in backyards, and more. While many communities have a porch fest of their own, some think Somerville can't be beat. Whether you're enjoying the soft pop-rock sounds on one porch or the thumping bass of a DJ just a few doors down, attendees like Chris and Drew say there's no better Porch Fest than Somerville's.

"I've been to Porch Fest in, like, different parts of the country, different cities, and, like, this is my favorite," Chris said.

"I think there's something about Somerville itself that draws a certain kind of people that, you know, like to partake with others, like, no matter what it is. And I think there's a real culture in Somerville that maybe some other towns might not have," Drew explained.
