NBC News projects that John Hickenlooper will win the Democratic Senate primary in Colorado, defeating state Senator Julie Gonzales. Hickenlooper, a former governor and Denver mayor, has stated that this will likely be his last campaign for elected office. He led Gonzales 57% to 43% with over 80% of the expected votes counted.
Gonzales, a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America, criticized Hickenlooper for his Senate voting record, including votes to confirm 10 of President Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees. She also opposed his stance against "Medicare for All."
Hickenlooper, who first won the Senate seat in 2020, is expected to face state Senator Mark Baisley in the general election. Baisley ran unopposed in the Republican primary. Colorado has trended Democratic in recent years, making Hickenlooper the favored candidate in the upcoming election.
Hickenlooper's campaign focused on opposing ICE funding, protecting healthcare, and resisting the Trump administration. Gonzales, on the other hand, emphasized progressive issues like "Medicare for All" and abolishing ICE. Despite the challenges, Hickenlooper's experience and resources proved decisive in the primary.
