NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Fueling up runners has become a generational endeavor in Newton, Mass.

At Mile 16 of the 129th Boston Marathon, runners will find a water station run by a man named Frank. He said his spot has “been in the family name for over 30 years,” with his father taking the lead for the first 25 years.

The water and Gatorade at his station are crucial for the runners, but Frank said giving the runners space is a top priority for his team.

“Big rule is you have to be able to touch your table because if we have everybody taking one more step out into the road, it’s going to get very narrow,” said Frank.

The biggest challenge in recent years has been trying to rein in the new volunteers, who get impatient watching the professionals breeze past without taking a cup.

“The cardinal sin would be to impede a runner,” said Frank. “We don’t want to interfere with any runner.”
