Snowplow Businesses Rooting For Snow As Operating Costs Rise

KINGSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Snowplow drivers are hoping this winter brings more business than the last couple of years.

Not that long ago, having a plowing business in Massachusetts meant a steady influx of money throughout the winter. Nowadays in a changing climate, it has turned into more of a struggling side hustle.

Kingston’s Ryan Donovan has operated a snowplow business with a small crew on the South Shore for years. He said they have been spending more time in the yard than on the road.

“We seem to be landscaping further into December than we ever have,” said Donovan. “We can still put plants in the ground as long as we can put shovels in the ground.”

While snow-covered roads have been hard to find, steep prices for plowing equipment keep climbing.

“[For] the last couple of years, obviously with everything [more expensive] across the board, costs just keep going up,” said Donovan.

Now that winter has started to settle in, Donovan said he is hoping for more snowfall soon.
