WRENTHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds of people built up an appetite Thanksgiving morning at the seventh annual Turkeywacker 5K Trail Run in Wrentham.
The run at the William Rice Recreation Complex on Emerald Street raised money for Wrentham Recreation and the Wrentham Food Pantry.
Rev. Blake Blakesley delivered the "Ode to the Turkeywacker" as runners dressed as pilgrims, turkeys, and bananas warmed up.
"It’s a wonderful way for families to begin their Thanksgiving celebration," Blakesley told WBZ NewsRadio. "That’s the best part about this deal. You see little kids, all the way through teenagers and adults, and some senior citizens."
This year's first-place winner was 19-year-old Nate Sylven, who finished with a course record.
"Not a P.R. (personal record), but I’ll take it," Sylven said.
Sylven said the 5K was just a workout for his college cross country running team, but it also got him ready for a Thanksgiving feast.
"I definitely need to go home and eat a ton," Sylven beamed.
"It’s a family tradition, we usually have the whole family out," said Kevin Kelleher, another runner who finished early. "It’s something fun to do together before we all sit down and eat."
