PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Multiple sources said on Thursday that authorities are investigating a possible connection between the mass shooting at Brown University last Saturday and the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor two days later.
The AP says three anonymous sources came forward with information regarding the investigation, with two of those sources saying authorities have identified a second person of interest and are actively searching for them.
The shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island left two students dead and nine others in critical but stable condition. Although an initial person of interest was identified and taken into custody, they were later released, leaving the suspect at large.
Two days after the Brown shooting, MIT Professor Nuno F. G. Loureiro was fatally shot in his home on Monday, about 50 miles away from Brown University.
Previously, the FBI stated it knew of no links between the two shootings, but since then, multiple sources have come forward saying there is evidence to show the two crimes may be linked. There has been a $50,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
While Providence residents are upset that no suspect has been identified to the public, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha wants them to know work is being done.
“There’s no discouragement among people who understand that not every case can be solved quickly,” Neronha said at a news conference on Wednesday.
CBS News sources say police have identified and issued an arrest warrant for a suspect in the Brown University shootings.
