BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new film debuting at the New England Aquarium takes viewers on a deep dive into the world of dolphins.
"Call of the Dolphins" goes up close and personal beneath the surfaces to show how dolphins interact and form relationships with the world around them.
“It’s a movie centered around the relationship between people and dolphins,” director and North Reading native Jonathan Bird told WBZ NewsRadio.

He added that the film not only showcases the beauty of the mammal but also spotlights the important works of marine organizations, including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and its Marine Mammal Rescue Team out on Cape Cod.
Bird said that the IFAM rescue team responds to hundreds of calls to help Cape Cod dolphins a year, and “one thing that the film will do is help people realize that humanity is not so bad,” he said.
In addition to the Cape Cod dolphins, the movie also takes a look at how other schools of dolphins along the eastern coast adapt differently to their distinct environment.
For example, Bird said that South Carolina dolphins found ways to hunt for food coming up the surface. “They actually come completely out of the water to catch the fish, and then they wiggle back in which is in stark contrast to the animals in Cape Cod that actually get trap on the beach by accident.”
"Call of the Dolphins" is narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen. It premieres at the aquarium’s Simon Theater on Feb. 14 and runs through September.
