BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu held a press conference on Monday, where she gave blizzard updates and instructed Boston residents on how to stay safe.
She thanked city workers for the snow cleanup and Boston residents for staying off the roads as the snow stacks up as much as 40 inches in some areas.
“We have had fewer EMS and Fire calls than usual, and that shows that the city is doing a great job of staying off the roads,” said Mayor Wu. “I know that means a lot to our first responders and plow operators who are out there doing their best, and they’ve been doing that under incredibly difficult conditions.”
Over 900 plows and snow spreaders have been working throughout the storm, and whiteout conditions on the roads have been making roadwork tough. Mayor Wu mentioned how snowfall is expected to slow into Monday night, but Bostonians should be ready to do some shoveling.
“We’re asking residents as soon as the snow does stop, please try and when you’re able to shovel out your sidewalks, cars, fire hydrants, please shovel sidewalks at least 42 inches across, so all our neighbors can get around, and shovel all the way from the front of your property to the crosswalk,” said Mayor Wu.
“We are cancelling school again [on Tuesday,] and we will be delaying the opening of libraries and community centers until 12 noon tomorrow,” said Mayor Wu. “All other city buildings will operate on regular hours.”
In order to help plows keep the roads clean and safe, Mayor Wu also announced the city will maintain a snow emergency and parking ban until 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Mayor Wu also mentioned ‘Love Your Block’ neighborhood meetups taking place on Tuesday, held by neighborhood liaisons to clean up problematic areas.
