BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Public School (BPS) students will have more chances to explore the city for free.
Earlier this year, Mayor Michelle Wu launched BPS Sundays, which offers free admission to BPS students and up to three guests at a number of the city’s offerings. On the first two Sundays of each month, the Boston Children’s Museum, Franklin Park Zoo, Institute of Contemporary Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science and New England Aquarium all participate in the program.
On Sunday, Wu and her family went to the Franklin Park Zoo to announce that the program will be extended through the end of the year.
“We’ve heard stories of entire classes over the summer or during the school year who have said, ‘We are going to meet up at the zoo,’” said Wu. “Everyone knows that the cost isn’t going to be a barrier for everyone in the class.”
Wu said the free trips have resulted in roughly 36,000 tickets sold across the institutions.
“Some of our institutions have estimated nearly half of those who have come have said it was their very first time,” said Wu. “This helps us emphasize how lucky we are as a city to have these treasures.”
Zoo New England CEO John Linehan was happy to see the program get extended.
“We are thrilled to be having all of these young people in here. That’s our mission,” said Linehan.
