Massachusetts Residents Continue To Dig Out After Weekend Snowstorm

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts residents are digging after this weekend's winter storm dumped nearly 2 feet of snow in certain areas.

According to the National Weather Service, Boston received 23.2 inches of snow, while Worcester received 22.4 inches, making both totals some of the biggest snowstorms in each city’s history. Tackling that much snow has proven to be a tedious task for most; residents have spent spend hours trying to shovel out their cars and homes.

In Southie residents are racing to clear the mounds of snow in an effort to preserve their coveted parking spots with space savers.

“I was out here for a full hour yesterday morning and then my mom was out here for a full 4 hours yesterday just cleaning out the cars,” Molly, a South Boston resident, said.

“I’ve been going for about 2 days now,” Newton, another resident, said. “I have to get it done and make sure everyone’s safe."

Space savers can only be used when the city declares a snow emergency, but once that emergency ends, people have only 48 hours to use the savers before they must remove them.

The snow emergency in Boston ended on Monday at 8 p.m., which means that space savers must be removed by 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Residents are prepared with all sorts of items to keep their spots, with some using items they’ve collected from throughout the years.

“I have an old coffee table that I’m just going to throw out, I picked it off the street last summer,” said one woman.

While others are sticking with objects that they’ve used before.

“Lately, we’ve been using a stool because we don’t have much, its either a cone or a stool,” said Molly.

With the snow hardening due to below freezing temperatures (which are expected for the rest of the week) and the possibility of another snowstorm coming this weekend, the cleanup process seems to only be starting.
