BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Those who cross the David Ortiz Bridge on a daily basis are noticing something different, as the locks on the fence are now gone.

The "love locks," padlocks that people leave attached to the fence, are usually left there with words dedicated to a person or a relationship or an appreciation of the city. But now, nearly all of them are gone. MassDOT said crews removed the locks from the fence to prevent safety hazards and damage to the fence.

"For me, it's the memories but it's kind of sad that they're gone," said Claire.

Those who cross the bridge near Fenway Park said they understand the reasoning but are upset to see the locks go.

"This is my way to class," said Carol. "It's my last year as well and I was planning to kind of put my own lock but apparently they're not staying for long."
