HANOVER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Grocery stores are cracking down more and more on egg purchases, as prices continue to rise.

As bird flu continues to impact the nation’s egg supply, Americans have had to shell out increasingly more money to get them. According to the most recent data from the U.S. Board of Labor Statistics, the average price for a dozen eggs is $4.15.

The average cost of a dozen eggs peaked nationwide in January 2023 at $4.82. However, the ongoing bird flu outbreaks could cause that record to be broken as grocery stores try to make the most out of their decreasing supply.

“It’s been high and now it’s even higher,” said Donnie.

At the Market Basket in Hanover, Mass., signage indicates customers are only allowed to buy two cartons of eggs. Similar measures are being taken at other grocery stores both locally and nationally.

While limits might help spread the dwindling supply more evenly, it means sacrifice for those who eat a lot of eggs. WBZ NewsRadio’s Jim MacKay talked to shoppers at the Market Basket, as they maxed out the two-carton limit.

“We’ve adjusted our diet and our meals somewhat,” said Mark.

“I don’t know how young families do it nowadays,” said Lisa. “It’s just crazy.”
