BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — When most restaurant closed their doors for Christmas, there's one place Brookline's Jewish community can count on.
The Kosher Wok in Brookline has become a hot spot for those who keep kosher to fulfill a less talked about tradition on the Christian holiday.
Over the years, it's become a Jewish tradition to go out for Chinese food on Christmas Day, as Chinese restaurants tend to stay open on the holiday.
The fact that the Brookline restaurant keeps their food kosher, the orders pour in on Christmas year after year.
“There's one kosher Chinese restaurant here in Boston. The Kosher Walk,” one customer said, who sat down for a meal with her family. “We came for lunch because it was so crowded at dinner time."
“For a long time, there weren't a lot of other restaurants that were open today. Additionally, both Jewish people and Chinese people felt, you know, outside of the mainstream in America," another customer from Newton said.
This tradition has led to a massive amount of people stopping in at The Kosher Wok for dinner, so much so that the owner had to put a limit on the number of people who can dine in.
The owner limited dining in and take out orders in order to keep up with the rush.
“Usually like between 4 to 7, it's crazy busy,” the owner said. “It's a very crazy busy, you know? So that's why this year I decided to cut down the dining and delivery.”
Despite the busyness, Jewish folks from all over Greater Boston travel in to participate in this tradition.
