Two American military pilots are safe after an Apache helicopter went down Monday near the Strait of Hormuz. Investigators are now working to determine whether the crash was caused by enemy fire, a mechanical problem, or another issue.
President Trump said the crew survived and that more details are expected in a report being released today.
The incident had not been publicly announced by the administration before news reports surfaced Monday night.
The crash comes during heightened military tensions between the United States and Iran in one of the world's most important shipping lanes.
If Iran is found responsible, it would mark the first Apache helicopter lost in the conflict. The heavily armed aircraft has been used to patrol the strait and protect U.S. forces from drone and small-boat attacks.
The investigation continues as American naval and air operations remain active throughout the region.
