Broward County, FL - A new traffic enforcement initiative aimed at protecting students is coming to Broward County after school board members approved a camera program for district school buses.

The Broward County School Board voted to move forward with a stop arm camera system that will be installed on school buses throughout the district.

The technology is designed to record vehicles that illegally pass stopped school buses while children are boarding or exiting.

Officials say the program is intended to improve student safety by increasing compliance with traffic laws around school transportation.

Under Florida law, motorists are required to stop when a school bus activates its stop arm and warning lights.

Cameras mounted on buses will capture video and photographic evidence of suspected violations.

Those recordings will then undergo review before citations are issued to vehicle owners.

District officials estimate the program could generate millions of dollars in revenue annually through civil penalties issued to drivers who fail to stop.

School leaders emphasized that the primary objective is to reduce dangerous driving behavior and prevent injuries involving students near school buses.

The approval follows similar programs launched in other Florida school districts, where officials reported thousands of violations captured by bus mounted cameras.

Supporters argue that automated enforcement provides an additional layer of protection for students, while critics have raised concerns about citation accuracy and oversight.

School district leaders said procedures will be in place to review potential violations before tickets are issued.

Additional details regarding implementation, including how many buses will receive cameras and when enforcement will begin, are expected to be announced in the coming months.

The program represents one of the latest efforts by local officials to address traffic safety concerns around school transportation throughout Broward County.
