Study: “Touching Grass” Leads To Greater Life Satisfaction.

Touch grass” isn’t just slang used to tell someone to step away from their screens and spend time offline, turns out, it’s actually solid advice. New research finds that regularly spending time in nature can boost body image and life satisfaction, too.

A new study analyzes responses from more than 50-thousand people, between the ages of 18 and 99, from 58 countries, making it the largest study of its kind ever done. The findings back up previous research that showed that spending time in the natural world — like taking a walk in the country or forest bathing — can improve well-being. But the new study digs deeper into why, finding that contact with nature is linked with higher self-compassion, which promotes greater body appreciation and satisfaction with life.

According to lead study author Viren Swami, spending time in nature gives us opportunities for what’s known as “cognitive quiet” — “a state of awareness where our attention is effortlessly engaged.” Tranquil environments also give people a break from all the traffic, noise and crowds they deal with daily, helping them to feel restored. He explains, "At a time when many countries are searching for affordable ways to improve well-being, our findings highlight the value of natural environments as important public health resources and reinforce the importance of using scientific evidence to shape planning, education and health policies."⠀

Scott's Thoughts:

  • So, we’d all be better off spending more time in nature? Who knew?
  • I believe this. My blood pressure is at its best when I am relaxed outside.
  • The beach. That's where I am happiest. Not too crowded. Ocean sounds and no other noise.
