The historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena is undergoing a significant transformation, with a $30 million renovation aimed at maintaining its relevance in the modern sports landscape. This project will convert 5,000 bench seats into a premium field-level club, known as the South Field Club, offering luxury amenities and seating for over 1,000 fans. The renovation, funded by private donations and sponsors, is set to be completed in time for UCLA football’s home opener against San Diego State on Saturday, September 12.
The Rose Bowl has long balanced tradition with innovation, and this latest upgrade is no exception. According to Los Angeles Times, Jens Weiden, the Rose Bowl's CEO, emphasized the importance of moving forward while honoring the past. The new club will feature a speakeasy-style reception area and a 360-degree bar, designed to mimic the iconic shape of the Rose Bowl itself.
The renovation comes amid UCLA's commitment to remain at the Rose Bowl through 2044, following a lawsuit to enforce their contract. UCLA coach Bob Chesney praised the stadium's significance, stating, "To get a chance to walk in here and just feel this...is pretty special." AOL reports that fans will enjoy an upscale tailgating experience with included food options, though alcoholic beverages will cost extra.
The Rose Bowl's new club aims to attract fans with its unique offerings, including plush seating, climate-controlled spaces, and a seamless indoor-outdoor design. The Premium Experience notes that the renovation reduces the stadium's capacity from 89,000 to about 85,000. Despite these changes, the Rose Bowl remains a cherished landmark, blending nostalgia with modern amenities to enhance the fan experience.
