ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Construction has started on a new pedestrian bridge in Ada Township designed to connect residential areas to the downtown and Legacy Park. The bridge will span the Thornapple River and is part of the township's 2024 Connecting Community Campaign. The project, which began on January 5, 2026, aims to improve walkability and safety for pedestrians.

The bridge, measuring 270 feet, will replace a temporary pathway that currently crosses an existing bridge. This temporary path has been a concern due to its narrowness and proximity to traffic. The new elevated design will offer pedestrians scenic views of the surrounding parks and enhance safety by keeping them away from moving vehicles. Kevin Austin, director of the Ada Downtown Development Authority, stated that the bridge would allow for "multi-modal traffic" to access downtown more safely.

Grand River Construction was awarded the construction contract with a bid of approximately $2.1 million, making it the lowest of three bidders. The total project cost is estimated at $2.5 million, covering engineering, permitting, and contingency expenses. The bridge will connect to a boardwalk system, creating a continuous pathway through the area.

The township anticipates the project will be completed by July 15, 2026, with a possibility of finishing earlier if conditions allow. However, construction is weather-dependent and may face delays. The project is part of broader efforts to accommodate Ada Township's growing population and increase downtown activity, supporting local businesses and enhancing pedestrian connections.

During construction, sidewalk access to the lower pathway into Legacy Park is temporarily closed, and residents are advised to use alternative routes. The construction site is subject to ecological constraints, including eagle permits, making it a delicate space to operate in.
