All eyes are on New York today where Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is expected to appear in federal court after being captured in Caracas by the U.S. military.
Federal prosecutors are charging Maduro, his wife and their adult son with drug trafficking. Also happening today in New York, the UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting over the U.S. action in South America.
Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed has issued a statement following the U.S. military actions in Venezuela.
The Democratic lawmaker says President Trump waged war on a foreign nation without authorization, notification or any explanation to the American people and he will own the consequences of whatever comes next. Reed says initially the White House claimed the purpose was to capture Nicolás Maduro and his wife and now he claims the U.S. will run Venezuela and seize control of its oil reserves. Reed says it is "ludicrous" and no serious plan has been presented for how the undertaking would work or what it will cost the American people. He says Congress - not the President - has the sole power to authorize war and pursuing a regime change without the consent of the American people is a reckless overreach and abuse of power.
