Drivers using the Pennsylvania Turnpike will face a four-percent toll increase starting Sunday (January 4). This marks the lowest rate increase since 2014. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced that the increase is necessary to repay debt under Act 44, a law requiring the Turnpike to fund statewide transportation initiatives.

The toll increase will affect both the mainline and the Northeast Extension, where tolls are calculated based on distance traveled. The per-mile rate will rise from $0.07 to $0.073, and the segment fee will increase from $1.09 to $1.13. On other extensions, where tolls are not distance-based, a straight four-percent increase will apply.

For E-ZPass users, the most common toll for a passenger vehicle will increase from $1.86 to $1.94, while Toll By Plate customers will see their rate rise from $3.72 to $3.88. Class-5 tractor-trailer rates will also increase, with E-ZPass rates moving from $23.16 to $24.12 and Toll By Plate rates from $46.32 to $48.24.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has been raising tolls annually since Act 44 was enacted in 2007. Despite these increases, E-ZPass rates remain below the national average for toll roads.

The Commission encourages drivers to use E-ZPass to save 50% on tolls. Additionally, the PA Toll Pay app offers a 15% discount on Toll By Plate invoices. Future toll increases are expected to decrease to 3.5% in 2027 and 3% in 2028.
