San Antonio Socialist Group Organizes Protests Against US Military Action

A couple of dozen protesters representing socialist interests demonstrated with signs and banners at the corner of San Pedro and Basse Road in San Antonio Saturday afternoon, reacting US military action overnight that removed from power the so-called president of Venezuela.

Some of the protesters said they were afraid the military action would lead to a wider war, adding that the action was probably illegal and a violation of international law.

The event was organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation San Antonio, the local chapter of a national group that says it "stands in solidarity with working-class and oppressed people around the world," without noting that the people of Venezuela were oppressed and marginalized by the socialist tyranny of first Hugo Chavez and then Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro was removed from power in a middle of the night raid by the US military on Saturday; last year's election, which Maduro won, was considered suspicious for some irregularities in vote counting, which some anti-Maduro analysts calling his win illegitimate.

Over nearly 30 years, Chavez and then Maduro grew richer while the people of Venezuela grew poorer, until institutions and politicians were held in contempt by most of the public and poverty became a way of life for many, as the nation's wealth was diverted from public spending to enriching the Chavez and Maduro regimes and followers.

US Special Operations forces led a quick nighttime attack on the Venezuelan capital of Caracas Saturday morning, arresting Maduro, his wife and his grown son on federal narcotics and weapons charges, before sending them to New York City, where they are expected to stand trial.
