Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the star guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has been named Sports Illustrated's 2025 Sportsperson of the Year. The 27-year-old Canadian athlete is celebrated for his outstanding achievements, including leading the Thunder to their first NBA championship. Gilgeous-Alexander is the first NBA player to receive this honor since Stephen Curry in 2022 and the first Canadian to win it outright since Wayne Gretzky in 1982.
During the 2025 season, Gilgeous-Alexander earned the NBA's Most Valuable Player award, averaging 32.1 points, five rebounds, and a career-high 6.4 assists per game. His leadership helped the Thunder secure 68 regular-season wins and finish first in defensive rating. In the NBA Finals, he averaged 30.3 points per game, leading the Thunder to a seven-game victory over the Indiana Pacers and earning the Finals MVP title.
In recognition of his contributions, the Thunder rewarded Gilgeous-Alexander with a four-year, $285 million supermax contract extension, ensuring his presence in Oklahoma City through the 2030-31 season. Reflecting on his success, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged the significance of winning a championship with the Thunder, a feat that eluded previous MVPs Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden during their time with the team.
As the 2025-26 season progresses, the Thunder have started strong with a 29-5 record, with Gilgeous-Alexander continuing to shine by averaging 32.1 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game.
