Some changes to Louisiana's insurance laws are now in effect.
As of January 1st, anybody found to be 50 percent or less at fault in a traffic accident may still recover damages, based on his share of responsibility. Plaintiffs found to be 51 percent or more at fault are out of luck.
Another new tort reform limits how medical expenses are calculated in injury cases. Plaintiffs may recover only the amount actually paid for medical care, instead of the higher amount that's billed by providers.
Legislators could revisit these reforms this year.
