SAUGATUCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Michigan Department of Transportation has reopened Old Allegan Road at I-196.
Allegan County Dispatchers confirmed that to WOOD Radio at mid-afternoon Friday, but said at the time of this report that they were uncertain when the second northbound lane of the freeway will reopen. One lane reopened earlier this week.
Structural engineers had been inspecting the freeway bridge since a semi-truck hauling two trailers slid through a guard rail Monday and plunged down onto Old Allegan Road in Saugatuck Township. That caused some damage to the bridge beams.
The big rig burst into flames, but the driver was rescued by another driver who witnesses the crash on the icy freeway.
