(Des Moines, IA) -- Democrat Renee Hardman has won a special election in Iowa State Senate District 16, blocking Republicans from restoring a supermajority in the chamber.
"I vow to be a senator that will go into this role trying to do what's best for all Iowans, and for those who did not vote for me as their senator, I'm still going to work on their behalf," said Hardman.
Hardman will fill a seat that was left vacant after three-term Democratic Senator Claire Celsi died in October.
"I'm looking forward to really diving into what we can do to make life better for Iowans. Affordability is so critical, and healthcare, childcare, and medical care," said Hardman.
Hardman will be the first Black woman to serve in the Iowa Senate.
