A new poll shedding light on New Year’s Resolutions for 2026 reveals 31 percent of Americans will make resolutions, with 50 percent saying they believe they won’t follow through.
Ahead of the New Year’s resolution, Relationship Trainer, Julie Nise, says don’t decide while you’re in the moment- in your feelings.
“How do I feel now, how is this affecting me now? Do I want to get off the couch and go exercise now? Do I want to put down the fork now? The answer to that is, usually, no I don’t want to do that.” Nise said.
She says the biggest part of getting successful in accomplishing any goal- is to make sure your motivation strategy is correct. “You must associate your feelings with achieving the outcome. That’s what you think about, that’s what you imagine, that’s what you put your awareness on. Instead of, how do I feel in the moment.” She said.
Nise adds it’s important not to be overly optimistic and to take baby steps. “You can’t put a lot of pressure on yourself, unrealistically, and expect good things to happen.” The counselor said.
She recommends people make changes the moment you see them, rather than waiting for a big end of the year resolution. Nise says its best to set goals year-round, and to do it in a manner you can take steps and make progress along the way.
Ten percent of the participants polled said they didn’t feel like resolutions matter. Nise absolutely does not agree with that. She says they make a huge difference. Everything you do and everything you say should be pointed towards life goals in general, not just New Year’s resolutions. Goals and outcomes are extremely important.
