Fiery semi-truck crash in Saugatuck Township one of many in region today

SAUGATUCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Allegan County Emergency Management said Old Allegan Road underneath I-196 in Saugatuck Township remained closed as of Monday afternoon.

The northbound lanes of I-196 remained closed, as well, but the southbound lanes reopened by 11 a.m.

Allegan County's Emergency Management coordinator Sarah Clark told WOOD Radio it was a single-vehicle crash. Details about how it happened were not immediately available, but wind gusts in excess of 55 miles per hour at times caused blowing snow and reduced visibilities, not to mention the snow and ice on the freeway in Saugatuck Township

The crash occurred about 7:10 a.m.

Clark said there was no initial word on the driver's condition. But Saugatuck Township Fire District Chief Greg Janik told WOOD-TV the driver was walking around with unspecified injuries before being taken to a hospital. He added that a Michigan Department of Transportation crew will assess the structural integrity of the bridge to see if it can be reopened any time soon.

Consumers Energy was reporting more than 65,000 outages as of Monday afternoon. Many were concentrated in the central part of the state, roughly near Mount Pleasant. But there were widely scattered outages elsewhere, including areas near Rockford, Cedar Springs and along the lakeshore west of West Olive.
