The City of Cortland, New York, has been awarded $6 million in state funding to enhance the infrastructure along the Homer Avenue corridor. This funding, supported by Governor Kathy Hochul and the Regional Economic Development Council, marks the third-largest grant awarded in the state during the latest funding round. The project aims to improve the sewer, water, and stormwater systems in the area, which is key for redevelopment and new housing.
Cortland Mayor Scott Steve emphasized the importance of this funding, stating that it will help revitalize housing, strengthen neighborhoods, and address critical infrastructure needs. The improvements will support ongoing projects such as the Homer Avenue Plaza, the Gillette Skirt Factory, and Guthrie's healthcare facilities. Additionally, the upgrades will prepare the corridor for new housing development in Cortland and the nearby Village of Homer.
Public Works Superintendent Michael Wiese noted, "By upgrading these systems now, we are preparing our community to welcome new residents and support smart sustainable growth." The enhancements are expected to play a crucial role in the city's future development and sustainability efforts.
