Starbucks employees at the Port Republic Road location in Harrisonburg have officially unionized, joining more than 11,000 Starbucks workers nationwide under Starbucks Workers United.
Workers at the store announced their intent to unionize in November, and on Friday (December 19) secured certification after a decisive 16–1 vote. Baristas described the outcome as both energizing and affirming, saying it reflected their shared commitment to supporting one another and advocating for better working conditions.
Following the successful vote, employees participated in the nationwide “Red Cup Rebellion,” a labor action calling attention to what workers describe as ongoing unfair labor practices by the company. Baristas said the strike strengthened solidarity within the store and reinforced confidence in the union’s role.
Union members say their primary goals include ending alleged union-busting efforts and securing a fair first contract. Key demands include improved wages, consistent scheduling, and adequate staffing levels.
As employees prepare to return to work, they say they hope the unionization effort will lead to improved morale and a more supportive management environment. Workers also credited strong community backing for helping sustain them through the process, noting that local residents have shown up with supplies, encouragement, and public support.
Baristas say that support has underscored that their effort is part of a broader labor movement extending beyond their individual store.
