HEATH TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Hamilton Fire Department Chief David Haverdink died after being struck by a vehicle while responding to a medical incident in Heath Township on Tuesday (December 23). The accident occurred around 6 p.m. on M-40 near 136th Avenue. Haverdink, 74, was transported to the University of Michigan Health West in Wyoming in critical condition and passed away on Christmas Day.

Haverdink dedicated over 51 years to the Hamilton Fire Department, serving as chief for more than 40 of those years. He also served as the Allegan County Sheriff for eight years. The Hamilton Fire Department expressed deep respect for Haverdink's service and leadership, noting his significant impact across West Michigan.

Brandon Hinz, chief of South Haven Area Emergency Services, shared his condolences, stating, "Dave was a great person and a highly respected leader in public service whose impact was felt throughout Southwest Michigan." The Allegan County Sheriff's Office confirmed that alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.

The Hamilton Fire Department and Haverdink's family have requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time. Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
