An explosion and fire Tuesday afternoon at a Bucks County nursing home. Gov. Josh Shapiro says investigators think they know what caused it. "We believe, preliminarily, that it was a gas leak that caused it. The explosion was really quite catastrophic. We know that there are two fatalities," the governor said. Crews responded to reports of a gas odor at the Silver Lake nursing home in Bristol Township. According to a statement from the gas company, the crew was on site when the explosion occurred. Fire crews arrived at the building, which was partly collapsed, and rescued many of people. Five people are still unaccounted for.
It won't be a white Christmas, but Accu-Weather's Joe Lundberg says the day after Christmas is a different story. "It looks like several inches of snow and sleet are likely across the area. I think there could be four-to-eight inches of snow in portions of the Poconos and maybe the northwest corner of New Jersey and places like that. To our south and west there's more sleet and freezing rain and a lot less snow overall," Lundberg says. Lundberg figures the snow will begin around 3 or 4 o'clock Friday afternoon and continue into early Saturday morning.
State Police are investigating a targeted home burglary in Allen Township. Troopers say two burglars forced their way into a home on Windsor Drive last week and only stole five luxury watches with a total value of 20-thousand-dollars. Authorities said the suspects were seen on surveillance video in the area almost three weeks before the robbery. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact PSP.
Two homes are destroyed and three people are in the hospital after a Tuesday afternoon fire in Allentown. It happened in the 100 block of Gordon Street. Firefighters were able to contain the fire in about a half-hour and prevented it from spreading to any other rowhomes there. The conditions of the people hospitalized have not been released.
A man who graduated from Panther Valley High School in June 2024 was killed Tuesday in a crash near the high school. 20-year-old Stephen Hood reportedly lost control of his car on some ice and slammed into a utility pole. He died a short time later at the hospital.
First responders were called to an 18-wheeler crash on an I-78 offramp late last night. Northampton County officials said a tractor-trailer rolled over while exiting to Route 33 South in Lower Saucon Township shortly before 11:30 p.m. No other details have been released, including if anyone was injured.
Gas prices continue their downward trend across Pennsylvania. AAA East Central says the average price for a gallon of gas in Pennsylvania stood at $3.09 as of Tuesday, six cents lower than one week earlier and 12 cents less than one year ago. In the Lehigh Valley, the average price was $3.02, down seven cents from a week ago and a nickel lower than the 2024 price.
Penn State football is reportedly losing another member of the coaching staff. According to ESPN, defensive line coach and former PSU player Deion Barnes is expected to be hired by South Carolina. Eight defensive lineman have been drafted to the NFL since Barnes joined the Nittany Lions coaching staff in 2020, including first rounders Micah Parsons and Abdul Carter. Barnes' exit is part of the staff turnover at Penn State following the hiring of new head coach Matt Campbell.
