The United States Department of Education is opening an investigation into Brown University.
The probe is looking into whether the school violated the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, which requires higher education institutions to meet certain campus safety and security requirements to receive federal student aid.
Earlier this month, two students were killed when Claudio Neves Valente opened fire during a mass shooting.
Brown's president says immediate changes will be made to improve security.
Among those changes, the current Brown Police Chief Rodney Chatman has been placed on administrative leave.
Former Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements has been tapped as the interim chief.
