Syracuse, New York, issued over 21,000 tickets for speeding and red-light violations in school zones last month, according to city officials. This comes after the city transitioned from a grace period to full enforcement of its new traffic camera program on November 3. Each ticket carries a $50 fine, potentially generating over $1 million, with the city retaining 65% and the camera operator receiving 35% if all fines are collected.

During the grace period in October, the city issued over 82,000 warnings to drivers. The number of violations has since decreased, indicating that drivers are adjusting to the new enforcement measures and slowing down near schools. The city initially deployed 33 cameras, but reduced the number to 28 in November due to adjustments and relocations near schools. This reduction, along with fewer enforcement days due to snow and holidays, contributed to the lower number of violations.

In addition to school zone enforcement, Syracuse continues to ticket drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses. In November, the city issued 645 tickets for such violations, up from 361 in October. These tickets carry fines ranging from $250 to $300.

The city emphasizes that the goal of the program is to improve pedestrian safety around schools, not merely to issue fines. Mayor Walsh and Superintendent Davis have stressed the importance of safe driving to protect students, families, and school staff. The program is part of Syracuse's Vision Zero commitment to enhancing traffic safety.
