The recent capture of mountain lion P-129 near the construction site of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing in Agoura Hills marks a significant milestone for wildlife conservation efforts in the region.

The crossing, set to open in fall 2026, aims to provide a safe passage for animals across the 101 Freeway, which divides the Santa Monica Mountains. P-129 is the third mountain lion captured at the site and the first since construction began.

Beth Pratt, Regional Executive Director of the National Wildlife Federation, expressed excitement over the capture, stating, "To actually capture one right in sight of the crossing being built was pretty special." The capture is part of the National Park Service's Puma research project, which has been studying mountain lions in the area since 2002. This research has highlighted the isolation risks faced by mountain lions due to the freeway, leading to genetic issues like birth defects and sterility.

The wildlife crossing aims to connect fragmented habitats and facilitate mating opportunities for mountain lions, which are most at risk from isolation. The project, under construction since 2022, is on track to open next fall. The main structure over the 101 Freeway is complete, with native plants growing on top, and utility relocation is underway.

As the crossing nears completion, anticipation builds over which animal will first use it. Pratt speculated it could be P-129, a dominant male, or an unknown new cat. The capture of P-129 underscores the importance of the crossing in promoting genetic diversity and survival for mountain lions and other wildlife in the Santa Monica Mountains.
