Millions Of Drivers Expected To Use PA Turnpike This Holiday Season

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is gearing up for a busy holiday travel season, with nearly 7.4 million vehicles expected to use the system between Friday (December 19) and Thursday (January 1). Travelers are advised to plan ahead, as early winter weather in Pennsylvania can vary from rain to ice and snow.

To ensure smooth travel, all construction and maintenance work on the turnpike will be suspended during this period. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is also increasing personnel, including the GEICO Safety Patrol and Pennsylvania State Police, to enhance traveler safety.

For a cost-effective journey, drivers are encouraged to use E-ZPass, which offers a 50 percent discount on tolls. The PA Toll Pay App and Toll Calculator can help manage and predict toll costs. Additionally, the turnpike has transitioned to Open Road Tolling (ORT) in some areas, removing toll plazas to improve traffic flow.

Travelers can access real-time traffic updates via the 511PA system, which provides alerts through a smartphone app, changeable message signs, and online resources. In case of emergencies, drivers can dial *11 for assistance.
