The Life Decisions We Stress Over Most

We make hundreds of choices every day and most of them are easy enough, like what to eat for dinner or wear to work, but others require a little more thought. Choices related to moving, work or relationships - even whether you should text your ex - tend to be more challenging. And thanks to science, we now know which life decisions people consider the riskiest.

In a new, large-scale study, researchers asked more than 4-thousand participants to list the toughest decisions they made recently. And it turns out, people stress about certain categories of choices a lot more than others.

  • After analyzing the responses, study authors found that decisions related to work and career top the chart.
  • The riskiest choice overall, regardless of age or gender, is whether or not to take a new job.
  • Deciding whether to quit a job comes in a close second.
  • Some pretty important life choices are much further down the list, like having kids (number 14) and moving (number 19).
  • Researchers were most surprised that the top answers didn’t involve health or social activities, like dating, instead, people think occupational choices are the riskiest.

The Life Decisions People Consider The Riskiest

  1. Accept a new job
  2. Quit a job (without another job lined up)
  3. Invest money
  4. Drive a car (when tired, intoxicated, distracted or during bad weather)
  5. Become self-employed
  6. Buy a house
  7. Get surgery
  8. Get married
  9. Get vaccinated
  10. Emigrate (moving to a new country)
