Rats Will Use Cannabis To Deal With Stress If It's Offered

DW: Can we file this under DUUHHHHHHH???

New research shows that stressed-out rats are more likely to use cannabis when given the chance. Scientists at Washington State University created detailed behavior profiles for 48 rats, then let them access cannabis vapor for an hour a day over three weeks. The rats could get the vapor by poking their nose into a small port. Rats with higher levels of the stress hormone corticosterone used the cannabis more often than calmer rats.

The connection was tied to their regular baseline stress levels, not stress from specific tasks or puzzles. Researchers also found that rats who had trouble adapting to changing rules were more motivated to seek out the cannabis. Scientists hope this information could help people understand their own cannabis habits and make smarter choices about use.
