What started as a routine afternoon at a park quickly turned into a tense search in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Police officers spent about 40 minutes looking for a missing five-year-old autistic boy after learning he’d wandered away from a playground. This week, the department shared a video showing their officers thoroughly searching the surrounding area.
While checking near a retention pond, Officer Jacob Hugley spotted a section of fencing that had been pulled up. Following his instincts, he climbed under the fence and called out for the boy in an open storm drain. After hearing a small voice respond, Officer Steven Nunez crawled into the pipe and located him several hundred feet inside.
Officers carefully pulled the boy safely out of the drain and confirmed that he was uninjured. The department used the moment to share information about Project Lifesaver, a search-and-rescue program that uses tracking devices to help find people at risk of wandering.
