Former Vice President Kamala Harris said she was stunned to hear President Donald Trump hawking his book when she called to check on him following his assassination attempt.
During her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday (December 17), Harris recounted her call with Trump after last year's assassination attempt at his Florida golf course.
“I called him to check on him,” Harris said. “And while I was [being told] one minute, ‘We’re going to go and get him,’ I could hear him in the background, and he was selling his book to somebody.”
Harris said she was stunned to hear Trump hawking his book just after an attempt to take his life.
“The significance of an attempt to assassinate a former president of the United States … and the fact that, at that very — what should be a somber moment for all of us — that that was happening in the background was … unbelievable,” the former Vice President said, adding that it was “not surprising.”
Harris' late-night appearance comes as she continues to promote her memoir, "107 Days," which includes details about the phone call with Trump following the assassination attempt. In the book, Harris writes that Trump privately praised her during the conversation and promised to “tone it down” on the campaign trail.
In response to Harris' comments, White House spokeswoman Elizabeth Huston criticized the author's ongoing book tour, saying she suffered a “landslide election defeat” to Trump and that “no amount of whining now can change” the outcome.
