Funding the Flip: Abbott Vows to Turn Harris County Red

Republicans appear finally ready to mount a serious challenge to years of Democrat domination in Harris County, thanks to a powerful ally. Gov. Greg Abbott, who recently announced his bid for a fourth term, has outlined some of his key priorities for 2026. First, property tax reform, and second, turning Harris County red---"dark red" to be exact. And Abbott is putting his money where his mouth is. The Houston Chronicle reports Abbott is pledging to spend $25 million from his $90 million campaign war chest to help Republicans take back the state's largest county.

But Abbott's plan isn't just about money. He has recruited candidates for several Texas House seats in Houston, where Democrats have been running unopposed for years. And Abbott has already endorsed Marty Lancton, the Republican front runner for county judge. "This is probably the first time in decades that we've actually had a Republican running in every state house district in Harris County," says Cindy Siegel, Harris County GOP Chair. "And we're actively going out this year, and our focus is going to be on local issues."

There are some positive signs for Republican in Harris County. The GOP won 10 countywide judicial races last year, its best showing in a decade. Siegel says this is the culmination of an effort that started five years ago when the party was at rock bottom in the county. "I think we've shown people, not only in Harris County but across the state with the governor, and nationally, that Harris County is winnable," she tells KTRH. "There was a time that it was red, and we plan on making it red again."
