LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel plans to intervene in Consumers Energy's request for a significant natural gas rate hike. The utility company is seeking approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission to raise rates by $240 million annually. This proposed increase would mean nearly a ten percent hike for consumers.
The request comes just three months after Consumers Energy implemented a $157.5 million rate increase for natural gas. This sequence of rate hikes has raised concerns among consumers and officials alike, prompting Nessel's decision to step in.
Nessel's intervention aims to ensure that any rate adjustments are fair and justified, considering the financial impact on Michigan residents. The Michigan Public Service Commission will review the request and make a determination on whether to approve the proposed increase.
As the process unfolds, the attorney general's involvement highlights the importance of regulatory oversight in utility pricing and the need to balance company needs with consumer protection.
