TSA Holiday Travel Rules: What You Can and Can’t Bring

The holidays are here, and so are the airport crowds. With more than 8 million people expected to fly between December 20 and January 1, security lines are going to be packed. Add in all the presents and festive foods people are carrying, and things could get even slower.

So what’s allowed in your carry-on, and what needs to go in your checked bag? Let’s break it down so you don’t get stuck unwrapping gifts at the checkpoint.

Wrapped Gifts 🎁

We all love the look of a perfectly wrapped present, but TSA may need to peek inside. If your gift sets off an alarm, you’ll have to unwrap it. To save yourself the hassle, use gift bags instead. Easy in, easy out.

Electronic Gifts 💻🎮

Laptops, gaming systems, even coffee makers can go in your carry-on. Just remember: they’ll need to be placed in a bin for X-ray screening. Pack them somewhere easy to grab so you’re not digging through your bag in line.

Baked Goods 🍪🍰

Good news: cookies, cakes, pies, and fruitcakes are all solid foods, so they’re fine to bring through security. Your holiday treats can travel with you.

Liquids & Spreadables 🥂🍯

Here’s where it gets tricky. Eggnog, champagne, maple syrup, jams, and preserves all count as liquids or spreadables. If they’re over 3.4 ounces, they have to go in your checked bag. TSA’s rule of thumb: “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, it belongs in checked luggage.”

Surprising No-Gos ❌

Snow globes might look innocent, but if they hold more than 3.4 ounces of liquid, they’re not allowed in carry-ons. When in doubt, check TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool before you pack.
