"Purple Out" Today in Remembrance of ABC 13 Anchor Mark Spain

Our media partner, ABC13 - WSET is asking the community to wear purple today in honor of Mark Spain, the local news anchor and Lynchburg resident who passed away one year ago from pancreatic cancer:

December 18, 2024, was a dark day for ABC13 and the community beyond, as our beloved anchor Mark Spain died after battling pancreatic cancer.

In the weeks leading up to his death, the area came together to show support for Mark by wearing purple.

Mark, his family, and our own ABC13 family were blown away by that support as people wore purple, lit their buildings purple, and put up signs of encouragement.

Now, at the one-year anniversary of his death, we're looking back at Mark's life even as we look ahead to honoring his memory.

We would like to show support to the Spain family and honor him by lighting the area purple once more.

If you would like to take part in the effort, we ask that you turn lights and businesses purple and wear purple on Thursday, December 18.

“Mark was a huge part of the ABC13 - WSET family and we know how beloved he was in this community,” said George Kayes, Vice President and General Manager of ABC13 - WSET.

“We appreciate anyone who is willing to help us paint the town purple in his honor,” Kayes added.

Be sure to tune in to ABC13 - WSET's newscasts tonight as they remember their co-worker, Mark Spain.
