The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office has issued a reminder to snowmobile enthusiasts that public trails in the county will remain closed until at least January 2. The trails will only open if there is sufficient snow cover and conditions are deemed safe. Riding on these trails before the official opening date is prohibited by law, as many trails are located on private property.
The Sheriff's Office emphasizes that early use of the trails can lead to significant damage, and riders may face criminal or personal liability for trespassing. Local snowmobile clubs are responsible for maintaining and inspecting the trails, and they often provide updates on trail conditions through their social media accounts and websites.
According to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, snowmobilers should ensure their vehicles comply with New York State requirements, including up-to-date registration and valid insurance. Riders are also advised to wear appropriate safety gear, such as a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection.
The Sheriff's Office, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, will conduct patrols to ensure compliance and promote safety on the trails. For the latest updates on trail status, riders are encouraged to check with their local snowmobile clubs or visit the New York State Snowmobile Association's website.
