Nick Reiner, son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner, appeared in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday (December 17) after being charged with the murder of his parents. The 32-year-old faces two counts of first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of his parents at their Brentwood home. His arraignment has been postponed to January 7, 2026.
Reiner, who was arrested on Sunday (December 14) in Exposition Park, is being held without bail. During his brief court appearance, he wore a blue suicide prevention smock, commonly used for defendants at risk of self-harm. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, he also faces a special allegation for using a knife in the crime.
The Reiners were discovered by their daughter after a massage therapist alerted her that they were not responding at the gate. The couple was found dead in their master bedroom. Authorities have not disclosed a motive, but it was reported that Nick Reiner had a history of drug addiction and had argued with his parents at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien the night before their deaths.
Nick's attorney, Alan Jackson, highlighted the complexity of the case and urged for a careful analysis moving forward.
"We ask that during this process, you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward," Jackson told reporters outside the courthouse. "Not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity and with the respect that this system and this process deserves, and that the family deserves."
Rob Reiner, known for directing films like When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride, met Michele on the set of When Harry Met Sally. They had three children together: Jake, Romy, and Nick. In a statement, Jake and Romy expressed their grief and requested privacy. They asked for their parents to be remembered for their contributions and the love they shared.
Nick Reiner, who co-wrote the film Being Charlie with his father, has struggled with addiction in the past.
