The spread of the flu is worsening across the Hudson Valley, with Westchester County reporting the highest number of infections at 1,861 for the week ending December 6. Orange County follows with 592 cases, and Rockland County reports 562 cases. Since the start of the flu season in October, New York State has recorded over 64,000 cases. Health officials emphasize that the best protection against the flu is good hygiene and vaccination.

The New York State Department of Health is urging residents to get vaccinated as flu cases surge across the region. State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald previously stated, "We expect a more severe flu season due to circulating strains of the virus compared to last year." The flu vaccine is readily available at pharmacies and doctor's offices, and remains the best defense against infection.

Dr. McDonald declared influenza prevalent in New York State on December 2, requiring unvaccinated healthcare personnel to wear masks in patient areas. The New York State Department of Health reports a significant increase in flu cases and hospitalizations. Week-over-week lab-confirmed flu cases outside of New York City rose by 114%, and hospitalizations climbed by 99%.

Health officials stress that flu vaccination can reduce the risk of severe illness. National Influenza Vaccination Week, observed from December 1 to 5, serves as a reminder that it is not too late to get vaccinated. The flu shot is available to those six months and older, with certain groups at higher risk for complications.
