Miami, FL - The Miami Dolphins made a significant quarterback decision this week that quickly drew attention across the league and appeared to spark a reaction from one of the team’s biggest stars.

On Wednesday, the Dolphins announced rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers will start in place of Tua Tagovailoa following a stretch of inconsistent play.

The move comes after Miami’s 28 to 15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, a game that highlighted ongoing offensive struggles.

Tagovailoa, who signed a four year, $212 million contract extension in July 2024 with $167 million guaranteed, has had a difficult season despite remaining statistically productive.

Through 14 games, Tagovailoa has completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 2,660 yards with 20 touchdowns.

However, his 15 interceptions lead the NFL and have played a major role in Miami’s uneven results this season.

The quarterback change is notable given Tagovailoa is only months into his long term deal and has been the franchise’s starter since 2020.

Shortly after news of the benching became public, wide receiver Tyreek Hill posted a GIF on social media showing a man giving a peace sign and fading away.

Ryan Gorman and Dana McKay cover this story and more on The Ryan Gorman Show:

Hill has been sidelined since Week 4 after tearing his ACL against the New York Jets, limiting his on field impact during the Dolphins’ struggles.

Hill has previously expressed frustration with the organization.

After the final game of the 2024 season, he publicly questioned his future in Miami before ultimately remaining with the team.

The Dolphins chose Ewers over veteran backup Zach Wilson, signaling confidence in the seventh round rookie.

Ewers has completed five of eight passes for 53 yards in limited action this season.
