A recent NBC News Decision Desk poll reveals that a majority of Americans are planning to cut back on holiday gift spending this year. The survey, conducted from November 20 to December 8, found that 55 percent of respondents intend to spend less on gifts compared to last year. Meanwhile, 36 percent plan to spend about the same, and only 9 percent are considering spending more.

Economic concerns are influencing these spending decisions. Inflation and the rising cost of living are key factors, with 44 percent of respondents identifying these as the most important economic issues for their families. The poll also highlights partisan differences, with over 60 percent of Democrats and independents planning to spend less, compared to 41 percent of Republicans. Income levels further impact spending plans, as two-thirds of those earning under $50,000 plan to reduce spending, compared to 54 percent of those earning between $50,000 and $100,000, and 43 percent of those earning over $100,000.

Gender differences are also evident, with 62 percent of women planning to spend less, compared to 48 percent of men. Additionally, 43 percent of respondents reported cutting back on holiday spending in general due to economic conditions.

The poll also found that 41 percent of respondents feel their personal financial situation is about the same as last year, while 35 percent say it is worse, and 24 percent say it is better. Despite these challenges, 59 percent of respondents believe 2025 has been a good year for them and their families.

According to NBC News, the survey included 20,252 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.
