A Mom’s Act Of Kindness Leads To Unexpected Friendship

Keith Tidwell and Debbie Rhoden first met at the Kroger grocery store in Macon, Georgia, where Tidwell works the night shift in the produce department. For years, they barely spoke, even though she regularly saw him while shopping. Their connection changed about a year and a half ago when Rhoden noticed Tidwell walking down the highway on his way to work.

He walks nearly five miles each way to his job, a commute that can take close to two hours and often happens late at night. Rhoden recognized him, turned her car around, and offered him a ride, which Tidwell accepted despite them not knowing her well. That ride became the start of a regular routine, with her now driving him several times a week to help make his commute safer.

Rhoden lost her son, Carlos, months before offering the ride and felt moved to help in his memory, saying, “I think he would have wanted me to pick him up and take him to work.” The rides have helped Tidwell feel safer, but they both say the friendship they’ve formed will continue even when he gets his own transportation.
