Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has wrapped up his 27th consecutive annual tour of all 62 counties in New York. On Monday (December 15), Schumer visited A. Ooms & Sons Dairy Farm in Valatie, Columbia County, marking the final stop on his tour. The senator emphasized the importance of meeting New Yorkers from every corner of the state, which he says energizes him and informs his legislative priorities.
During his visit, Schumer promoted the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, a bipartisan bill recently passed by the Senate. The legislation aims to reintroduce whole and reduced-fat milk in school cafeterias, a practice that has been restricted since 2012. Schumer highlighted the health benefits of milk, including better bone health and lower risks of obesity and cardiovascular disease, as reasons for supporting the bill. He urged the House of Representatives to pass the legislation, which he believes will benefit both students and dairy farmers in New York.
Schumer's visit to the dairy farm was not only significant for completing his statewide tour but also for advocating for the dairy industry, a vital part of New York's agricultural economy. According to Schumer's press release, New York is the nation's fifth-largest dairy state, with nearly 3,000 dairy farms producing over 16.1 billion pounds of milk annually.
Despite his responsibilities in Washington, Schumer remains committed to his annual county tour, stating that it is essential for understanding the needs of his constituents. He described the tour as a "work requirement" rather than a hobby, emphasizing the importance of direct engagement with New Yorkers.
Schumer's dedication to his state is evident in his continuous efforts to address local concerns, such as the affordability of groceries and healthcare. As he navigates his role as a Democratic leader, Schumer remains focused on balancing national responsibilities with the needs of New Yorkers.
